* Establish, facilitate and encourage an Australian Community of Practice for ePortfolio researchers and practitioners, and to
* Introduce a regular Australian conference to provide a forum in which to explore and discuss ePortfolio research and practice.

The project seeks to build on the work undertaken in the Australian ePortfolio Project by enhancing the use of ePortfolios in Australian universities to benefit individual students, the quality of learning and the value of higher education outcomes, thereby contributing to the competitiveness of Australian graduates in a global employment market. The project will provide an opportunity to further develop the relationships already established with stakeholders across the school, vocational, business and professional sectors, as well as with international ePortfolio communities.

The neXus2 workforce planning study: the institutional picture – final report (January 2009)

This study was undertaken by Dr Gillian Hallam for Australian Library & Information Association (ALIA) and National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA). The report presents the institutional perspective of the Australian library and information profession, as well as identifying diverse issues that impact on recruitment and retention, and the training and development of library staff. The final report can be found here. This major national study involved the participation of a wide variety of library organisations, representing the public, academic and special library sectors, ranging from the National Library of Australia to small regional libraries. The data collected has been analysed from the perspectives of the different library sectors.

The neXus census of the LIS workforce: the individual picture

This survey has been undertaken by the Australian Library & Information Association (ALIA), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and CAVAL Collaborative Solutions. The report provides a demographic, educational and employment picture of the Australian library and information profession, as well as identifying diverse workforce planning activities being undertaken in the sector. The report can be found here. Appendices for the report are available.

The research is aligned with similar projects completed in Canada, the United Kingdom and United States, enabling a comparison between the situations in Australia and other countries.

The project leader for the report has been Associate Professor Dr Gillian Hallam, past President of ALIA and past Chair of the ALIA Education Reference Group. The work on which the report is based involved surveys of individuals and institutions within the Australian library and information sector.

In recent years, there has been considerable anecdotal evidence concerning challenges facing the profession, notably about people leaving the library employment and the ‘greying’ of the profession. Through the neXus census, the researchers have captured accurate data about the LIS workforce, both currently employed and retired, recent graduates embarking on library careers and students enrolled in LIS studies.

“The Department of the Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Public Works seek to develop an options paper to determine potential future service delivery models for the departmental and agency libraries within the Queensland Government. The nature of ongoing technological, financial and administrative changes presents Government library and research services with a number of challenges in terms of delivering services to their clients. The review project will make it possible to examine the environmental factors impacting on contemporary libraries, to appraise the costs of service provision and to consider the opportunities for optimising services to achieve improved access to information resources across the core agencies.”

To achieve this an extensive survey (developed by the consultant in charge) was deployed to capture the required information, providing the basis for a detailed report with recommendations.

About the project

The project aims to establish a picture of the Australian library and information science (LIS) profession and identify how its future education and training can be better adapted to an employment landscape where traditional roles are changing and non-traditional roles are emerging as a result of drivers such as technological change and a growing need for information management skills across the workforce. It will investigate the question of how LIS education in Australia can produce, in a sustainable manner, the diverse supply of graduates with the appropriate attributes to develop and maintain high quality professional practice in the rapidly changing twenty-first century. The project is being undertaken by 11 tertiary education institutions within Australia, with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) as the project leader. The outcomes from the project will have a significant bearing on LIS education in Australia and on the quality of Australia’s future LIS professionals.

This project involved four detailed online surveys covering the following user communities:

Current LIS Students

LIS Graduates

LIS Educators

Workforce Study
